| Did you know that roughly one million people will join their local gym in the New Year?
We assume this data is USA based and further searching suggested that in the UK more than 100,000 people were expected to join UK fitness clubs in January 2006. I appreciate these… | |

… statistics are pre-recession and a few years old, but going by the latest London new year resolution survey, fitness for men and woman remains a top priority. The number of people joining health clubs is on average 65% higher in January than in other months. In January 2006 in excess of 100,000 UK people joined a gym, compared to an average of 63,500 per month across the rest of the year. I don’t imagine the UK trend is unique so globally that is a lot of membership cards issued! Whilst other areas of household expenditure such as hotels and private education have risen above inflation over recent years, membership subscriptions to a gym remain fairly static. On average, membership fees rose by 3.2% during 2006. January would appear to be a good month to target the leisure industry. Our findings in the UK suggest the majority of Leisure groups are still issuing the old paper style laminated card…. Do they call this heat seal or cold seal??? I get confused!
At a time when membership is high, now is the time to ensure costs are down and efficiency improved. Depending on the number of member cards issued, a club could benefit from either a low cost and reliable Magicard Pronto to a robust Evolis Dualys to customise their blank or pre-printed membership cards.
I’m sharing these stats and considerations to encourage all resellers (globally) to target Leisure more. Many think we’ve reached saturation, I on the other hand think not! Eagle Technologies exhibited at LIW 2009, an exhibition focused entirely on the leisure industry and I was amazed at the number of club managers and owners of all sizes that did not know that a card printer can be small, simple to operate, low in price and produce high quality cards with photo’s and logo’s. We’ve got a lot of work to do!
Reshma Kapadia reported for SmartMoney that the fitness craze is going gangbusters, with gym attendance up 23% since 2001, to 41.3 million, according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA).
