If photo quality, or as we at Eagle like to say ‘near to litho quality on the desk’ is your desire, then we now have another contender on the market for you to think about!
Zebra Tech finally joins the re-transfer printing world and announces that it will print faster than it’s rivals, very important if you’re printing high volume.
Zebra claims a maximum print speed of 190 cards per hour (cph) single side and 170 cph both sides with its patent pending simultaneous 2-side transfer process.
Price has not yet been confirmed to us so the question is “Will speed cost more”?
Today the Fargo HDP5000 high definition printer delivering photo quality card printing leads the re-transfer price war, street retail value these days can be as low £1800 for a basic model, not bad when you consider the MRRP is £2,500.
Previously the DNP CX330 designed/created by JVC (also available under many other OEM brands, e.g. Magicard Prima) leads the way with quality printing and reliable volume printing. In our opinion, we believe that today it still does and whilst costing almost 2 times the price of the Fargo HDP equivalent, durability can provide longer term savings. In fact our own original CX210 models as they were once called are still printing strong after 5+ years in our card printing bureau department.
Do we need another re-transfer printer?
Well, as we know, competition can be good. It can create stronger, more technically advanced products. Quality can improve too as the race to create the perfect product can deliver leadership positions for the maker but more so is price management. The more competition, the more price leadership becomes apparent and that can also be good for market growth, if managed well. But none of this is important if quality and reliability is weak! Only time will tell.
So, yes, from an Eagle perspective, we welcome Zebra’s move to enter the re-transfer card printing market.

Some words from Zebra Technologies Inc…
The Zebra ZXP Series8™, a revolutionary retransfer printer that offers a host of options for smart card encoding and networking making it ideal for such applications as high security ID cards, driver’s licenses, gift cards and financial cards. The Zebra ZXP Series 8 produces photo-quality cards at nearly twice the speed of other retransfer printers currently on the market
Unlike its counterparts, the ZXP Series 8 printer delivers photo quality, over-the-edge, high speedprinting on many different types of cards, including those with uneven surfaces such as smart cards, polycarbonate cards for security applications, and biopolymer cards. The printer is available in single- and dual-sided printing configurations with a full portfolio of magnetic encoding, smart card encoding, single- and dual-sided lamination, and connectivity options.
“Industry adoption of retransfer printing has been slow, in part, because of slow print speeds and high costs,” said Ram Ramaprasad, director of product management for Zebra Technologies. “Zebra developed the ZXP Series 8 printer to respond to the industry’s need for an on-demand retransfer printer capable of delivering higher print speeds at lower costs without sacrificing the image quality. Zebra also developed the ZMotif™ software platform, to make application integration easier than ever.”
Designed to significantly improve enterprise scalability and reliability, a XML-based softwaredevelopment kit is available to support a broad array of features and technologies, making it easierand faster to integrate the ZXP Series 8 retransfer printer with host of enterprise applications.
Some of the ZXP Series 8 retransfer printer features include:
· Photo print quality
· Best in class throughput for printing, encoding, and laminating
· True over-the-edge printing
· Ability to print on smart cards or cards with uneven card surfaces
· Ability to print on non PVC cards such as polycarbonate and biopolymer cards
· More durable and abrasion resistant cards
· Some fraud protection since the film is inherently tamper evident
· XML-based SDK for easier application integration
Standard and optional features of the ZXP Series 8 retransfer printer include: magnetic stripe encoder; combination smart card contact and contactless encoders; contact station; USB or Ethernet connectivity; and security mechanical locks. Planned future options include support for UHF Gen 2 RFID encoder, single- and dual-sided laminator, and 802.11g wireless connectivity.
